Fervo Energy

Geothermal

Enhanced geothermal developer. Signed the largest deal of its kind with Google on 1 September.

396 MW contracted, option to about 1 GW by 2030

What has happened

Fervo's Utah plant is the first utility-scale enhanced geothermal project anywhere to produce power

· L1 Power and land · first of three 33 MW units; about 100 MW Phase I; commercial operation by 1 Oct · Confirmed

Fervo Energy says the first unit at Cape Station, its geothermal plant in Beaver County, Utah, has produced its first power, which it calls the first time a utility-scale enhanced geothermal development has reached that point anywhere in the world. Enhanced geothermal pumps water through hot rock deep underground and uses the heat to make electricity. Phase I is about 100 megawatts in three 33-megawatt units. The first is expected to reach commercial operation by 1 October 2026 and the other two by 1 January 2027. Fervo ties the need for it to electricity demand from data centres and AI; nothing changes for households yet.

Google signs the largest enhanced geothermal deal to date with Fervo

· L1 Power and land · 396 MW · Confirmed

Geothermal power taps heat from deep underground and runs day and night, unlike solar or wind. Google signed the largest such deal yet, at 396 megawatts. The project is not expected to start producing until 2028, and Google has not yet committed to building the data centre it would serve.
