Amazon promises over $1 billion more for towns hosting its data centres

· L1 Power and land · $1bn+ over 5 years · Confirmed

Amazon says it will spend more than $1 billion over the next five years on infrastructure upgrades and community projects in towns where it builds AWS data centres, as local pushback against new data centres grows across the US. The money is meant for things like road and utility upgrades near its sites. It's Amazon's answer to a complaint showing up in more places: that a data centre brings jobs and tax revenue to a local government, but also strains roads, water and the power grid for the people living next to it.

AWS cannot restore one UAE zone and its entire Bahrain region after war-related strikes, DataCenterDynamics reports

· L1 Power and land · UAE zone mec1-az2 and the whole Bahrain region me-south-1 · Reported

DataCenterDynamics reports that Amazon Web Services says it cannot restore customer access to one of its UAE availability zones, mec1-az2 inside the me-central-1 region, or to its entire Bahrain region, me-south-1, both damaged by strikes earlier in 2026 tied to the conflict involving Iran. DataCenterDynamics quotes AWS saying it has determined it is unable to restore access to the resources and data hosted exclusively in the mec1-az2 availability zone, and on Bahrain that the damage spanned multiple availability zones and exceeded what its regional and multi-AZ services are designed to withstand. This desk could not find an AWS-owned page carrying those statements, and the article does not say where AWS made them, so the item runs as Reported. For any business running in the Gulf, this is AWS itself saying some data placed in those zones is gone, not delayed.

Amazon ties up to $8 billion of generator orders to a stock warrant in Generac

· L1 Power and land · $8bn ceiling, $2.4bn firm; warrant 1,693,745 sh at $200.9266 · Confirmed

Generac, a Wisconsin company best known for home backup generators, has signed a long-term supply agreement with Amazon for generators that keep data centres running when the power grid fails. The headline number is 8 billion dollars, but the filing is careful about what that number is: it is the ceiling on Amazon payments that a stock warrant vests against, not a sum Amazon has committed to spend. What Amazon has firmly scheduled is 2.4 billion dollars of deliveries in 2027 and 2028, which is about 30 percent of the ceiling. In exchange, Generac handed an Amazon subsidiary the right to buy up to 1,693,745 of its shares at 200.93 dollars each, about 340 million dollars of stock at that price, and roughly a fifth of it vested the moment the deal was signed. The rest only vests as Amazon actually pays. AI data centres cannot go dark during a grid outage, so backup power has become one of the most fought-over pieces of equipment in the industry. If you notice new generator pads or fuel storage tanks near a data centre in your area over the next two years, this kind of deal is why.

Cognition and AWS sign a multi-year deal to sell Devin, the AI coding agent, to more large companies

· L6 Applications and agents · multi-year collaboration; no dollar figure disclosed · Confirmed

Cognition, which builds the AI coding agent Devin, and Amazon Web Services announced a multi-year strategic collaboration on 15 September to expand how large companies buy and deploy Devin through AWS. No deal size is given. The companies offer customer results instead: at Mercedes-Benz they say Devin analysed more than 200,000 lines of COBOL, reducing an estimated eight-month modernisation project to eight days, and at an unnamed global automaker it moved a 25,000-line COBOL workflow off a mainframe to AWS Lambda at an estimated 73 percent lower cost. Both are labelled estimates by the companies themselves. COBOL is an old language still running inside banks and carmakers, and translating it has turned out to be one of the clearer uses for coding agents so far, more so than writing new code.

Qualcomm gives Amazon a warrant on 25 million shares that vests as Amazon's server chip purchases rise, counted up to $60bn

· L2 Silicon · up to $60bn · Confirmed

Qualcomm disclosed in a filing that on 3 September it issued an Amazon subsidiary a warrant, the right to buy up to 25 million Qualcomm shares at 161.26 dollars each, in connection with a collaboration under which Amazon Data Services buys Qualcomm server chip products, technology, systems and manufacturing services. The shares vest in tranches tied to commercial arrangements, binding orders and actual purchases, counted up to a maximum of 60 billion dollars in payments; 3.75 million shares vested at issuance on the initial purchase commitments. The filing does not name the chips and does not use the word AI, and the 60 billion is a ceiling on the payments that count toward the warrant, not a promise to buy. For an ordinary person nothing changes; this is a supplier and a customer agreeing how the supplier's shares reward future orders.

Amazon raises 2026 capex to $220B, attributing the whole rise to memory

· Band Money · $220B · Confirmed

Amazon told investors it will spend about 220 billion dollars this year, up from about 200 billion. It named one cause for the whole increase: memory has become more expensive. The number is not in the filing. It was said out loud on the earnings call.

Anthropic raises $65B at a $965B post-money valuation

· Band Money · $965B · Confirmed

Anthropic raised 65 billion dollars in one round, which valued it at 965 billion dollars once the money was in. That is near a trillion dollars for a company founded in 2021, and the figure is Anthropic's own published wording rather than an estimate.
