What happened

Profound, a New York based startup, announced on 15 September that it had raised 180 million dollars in a Series D at a 1.8 billion dollar valuation. Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins led the round, with existing investors including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Khosla Ventures and South Park Commons also taking part. The company builds software that helps brands understand and influence how they are described when people ask AI chatbots such as ChatGPT for recommendations, a category sometimes called answer engine optimisation, the AI-era version of search engine optimisation.

The round comes less than seven months after Profound's 96 million dollar Series C, which independent reporting values at roughly 1 billion dollars. On those two figures the valuation has grown by roughly 80 percent in that time, our own arithmetic. Profound's own release says it now serves more than 1,000 enterprise brands including more than a third of the Fortune 100. TechCrunch names Comcast, Estee Lauder and Walmart among its customers, and reports Profound saying revenue has increased threefold in the past six months, which is the company's own figure rather than an audited one.

Why it matters

Investors funding that pace are betting that as more people ask AI chatbots for product recommendations instead of searching the web, brands will pay to understand and shape those answers, the way they already pay for search engine optimisation and search advertising. This is the fourth large AI application round on this site in nine days, after Cognition, Harvey and Clay. Treating those four as one wave is our own reading; no source describes them that way.

Four AI application categories raised large rounds inside nine days. Treating them as one wave is our own reading rather than something any source states.
  1. $2bn at $48bn: Cognition raises to build coding agents (our reading: coding agents draw investor money first)
  2. $550M at $15.5bn: Harvey raises for legal AI (our reading: legal AI follows with its own vertical bet)
  3. $115M at $7.1bn: Clay raises for sales automation (our reading: sales automation joins the same run of rounds)
  4. $180M at $1.8bn: Profound raises for AI answer tracking

What would change it, and when

The bet depends on AI chatbots keeping or growing their share of shopping and research questions relative to traditional search. If that shift slows, or if the labs build brand-visibility tooling directly into their own products, the market Profound sells into could shrink or become a commodity.

What we do not know

Neither the release nor the independent coverage discloses actual revenue or profitability. The threefold growth claim is the company's own and is not audited or independently confirmed. No source says what share of the 1,000-plus customers pay meaningfully more than a nominal fee, and the roughly 1 billion dollar Series C valuation that our 80 percent figure rests on comes from independent reporting rather than from the company.

What this changes for you

If you use AI chatbots to research products, more of what you see is likely shaped by paid optimisation work like that of Profound's clients, in the same way search results and social feeds already are. It does not change the price of anything today.
